The Challenge

A leading multinational biopharmaceutical company, in concert with the American Lung Association, sought to launch an app and online community to help smokers facing common obstacles associated with quitting cigarettes by providing progress tracking, educational information and social community support.

The Approach

The client selected NewPage because of our extensive knowledge and experience with digital patient engagement applications. Following a discovery workshop with the client and ALA, NewPage designed a user experience and solution architecture. The user experience design was guided by the ALA and incorporated real world feedback from smokers about what they say is most helpful to support them throughout their journey to quit smoking: The app provided a personal progress tracker showing smoke free days and money saved; it provided access to curated health articles, tips and educational content tailored to assist smoking cessation; it also provided real-time social feeds allowing smokers to share their progress with friends and family and receive messages of encouragement and support. The app was made available on iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch and Android.

The Results

More than 20,000 people downloaded the mobile app created by NewPage – a company that has demonstrated extensive experience with digital patient engagement apps. As a result of using the app, 57% of smokers reported smoking less, and 64% said they would recommend the app to others.
